Team-up to Clean-up

Sunday September 27, 2009

Representatives of several Duncanville Soccer Association teams took the Team-up to Clean-up effort to Merrifield Elementary School. The school’s playground has become a popular site for organized youth sports. Football, soccer, baseball and cheerleading team practices are held on a daily basis.

Merrifield is a convenient practice location due to its open playground area as well as its location. The area had become quite unsightly due to the litter these teams leave behind. Water bottles and candy wrappers to rot out clothing items littered the edges of the school grounds as well as the adjacent private residential properties.

Members of the DV Diablitos (U12 boys) suggested a clean up day as a team building activity. Raul Gonzalez (Coach) took them up on their word and organized the “Team-up to Clean-up” effort by involving parents, siblings as well as members of the DV Venom (U11 Boys), who are also coached by Mr. Gonzalez. “With siblings alone, we involved DV Piranhas and Dragons (U9 Boys)”, said Mr. Gonzalez.

This is not only a team building effort as it gives the kids a sense of community and social responsibility; not to mention pride in self, schools and community. “Several elements of these teams have gone or still go to Merrifield. It’s only right that the kids give back a little through time and effort”, said Sefi Sanchez (Venom Asst. Coach and Mgr).

“This event brought on a whole new dimension to team foundation and spirit. I highly encourage organized youth sport teams, from football and soccer to cheerleading, to take on the responsibility of cleaning up where they practice and play. True responsive responsibility starts from within. I challenge coaches and teams to keep a beautiful Duncanville.” said, Mr.  Gonzalez.
